"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good people do nothing"
-Edmund Burke
PRESENTATION 1 addresses what bullying is, the different types, why it happens and why it is important for students to stand up for themselves and others. The major theme presented is "what's popular is not always right and what's right is not always popular." Kids are encouraged to make decisions based on what they know to be right rather than follow the crowd, as their actions towards others can and do have a big effect, positively or negatively. Humor, a variety of multi-media resources, and student centered/interactive activities make this a great fit for UPPER ELEMENTARY and MIDDLE SCHOOL students (with slight age appropriate variations for each group). Running time is 40-45 minutes.
PRESENTATION 2 teaches students strategies/tactics/methods for standing up for themselves and others. This is organized as the "5 C's of Being an Upstander" (Cold-Shoulder, Confidence, Compassion, Courage, and Cyber-Sense). Students are taught each strategy or tactic, then watch a video made by me demonstrating a bullying situation where that particular strategy or tactic would be effective. After being given time to discuss amongst themselves how they might employ the newly learned "C" students can volunteer to act out what they have learned. The videos are injected with humor, but are also very poignant, allowing students to both have fun and learn practical ways to stand up for themselves and others. This presentation is very effective for HIGH SCHOOL, MIDDLE SCHOOL and UPPER ELEMENTARY students alike (with age appropriate variations for each group). Running time is 40-45 minutes.
PRESENTATION 3 addresses what bullying is, the different types of bullying, why it is important to treat people kindly, and why it is important to for students to stand up for themselves and others. At this young age the message is that they need to talk to an adult they trust if they or someone they know is being bullied, so time is also spent on the difference between reporting and tattling, and the difference between a "big problem" and a "small problem." Humor, a variety of multi-media resources, student centered/interactive activities, and age appropriate terminology make this a great fit for LOWER ELEMENTARY students. Running time is 25-30 minutes.
PRESENTATION 4 goes beyond the scope of bullying, taking a broader approach to encourage students to work toward making their school the greatest place it can be by being an A.G.E.N.T. of Change. Kids are taught that by taking Action, Giving their all, understanding that Everyone has value, and using strength in Numbers they can create a school culture where everyone can feel comfortable Taking positive risks to have the richest and most fulfilling experience possible. As with all presentations, it is infused with humor, engaging interactive activities, and multi-media resources. This is a great option for UPPER ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL students. Running time is 40-45 minutes.
